Area Coordinator/Student Activities Coordinator

Morningside University is now accepting applications for the position of Area Coordinator/Student Activities Coordinator in Residence Life. This position is a full-time 12 month, live in position, primary duty is the management of the safety and education of 100-350 students that reside in assigned residence halls or apartment buildings in assigned area. The position also advises Morningside Activities Council (M.A.C.) and is responsible for the oversight of the $100,000 M.A.C. budget and oversees the residence life programming model. The position has on-call responsibilities on a rotation basis, which involves evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities:

Area Coordinator

  • Coordinate the day-to-day essential functions of residence halls or apartment buildings in assigned areas.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of student employees.
  • Appraises employee productivity and efficiency.
  • Handles complaints and grievances
  • Provides for the safety and security of employees, the residence halls, and the students that live in the facility.
  • In charge of weekly staff meetings with the Student Hall Director, Head Residents (H.R.s) and Resident Assistants (R.A.s)
  • Directs the opening and closing of campus residential facilities.
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation, providing 24-hour crisis management services as needed and must confront policy violations when incidents arise.
  • Assist with room registration and placement assignments as needed.
  • General residence life administrative duties, including the management of all maintenance, waivers, transfers, and safety concerns.
  • Meet regularly with custodians and maintenance to ensure smooth operation of the assigned residential area.
  • Regularly participates in the creation, planning, and execution of staff training weeks, and educational/training in-services.
  • Assist in the management of departmental budgets.
  • Manages/Oversees the summer housing responsibilities.

Resident Services

  • Advise Morningside Activities Council (M.A.C.)
  • Manages the $100,000 programming budgets and administers event contracts and riders (50+ events per year)
  • Directs, monitors, and evaluates Morningside Activities Council (M.A.C.) events, and other activities as assigned.
  • Participate in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of M.A.C. members.
  • Coordinate chaperones for M.A.C. activities and other student activity events as needed.
  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned (homecoming, orientation, & others)
  • Develop programming around designated heritage events/months.
  • Develop comprehensive events/programming calendar in collaboration with MAC executive team, which may include attending NACA or other student activities conferences.

Counseling/Advising

  • Serve as a resource for R.A. and campus programming.
  • Interact with students as a resource person and advisor.
  • Perform job-related counseling/advising tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in Residence Life and/or Student Activities.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work well with students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective communication, organization, and human relations skills
  • Hold a valid US driver’s license and be able to live on campus.
