THE MORNINGSIDE DIFFERENCE

Internships

Morningside University’s location in Sioux City gives students ample opportunity for internships at network-affiliated television stations, radio stations, newspapers, advertising or public relations firms, and many more.

Research & Active Learning

The Communication department is home to a student-run radio station, cable television channel, and online news source that both majors and non-majors can take part in to build experience.

Travel

You will have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally, and even internationally for professional conferences, industry field trips, or May Term courses. Travel grants and special scholarship eligibility may be available.

FEATURED COURSES

REQUIRED

Study of First Amendment issues, including libel and privacy. The course develops an important area of knowledge for persons planning careers in mass communication, but will also be of interest to media consumers because of the role law plays in shaping media content.

REQUIRED

Principles and practice of public relations in commercial and non-commercial fields; publicity and promotion campaigns emphasized.

ELECTIVE

Theory and practice of rhetoric used in professional settings from creating reports, writing proposals, and generating grants.

ELECTIVE

Students will create meaning–full photos which are sound in composition and technique. Photojournalists must not only know how to write and gather information, they must know the fundamentals of visual communication — how to sense, select and render a visual image — and how to combine image(s), cutlines and story logically as well as aesthetically. Additionally, because current technology emphasizes multimedia packages for electronic distribution, we will address topics and assignments that are realistic for a multi–media environment. Finally, students will be exposed to important issues surrounding images and visual truth.
