Never before has news and information been so accessible or in demand. The Department of Multimedia Communication acquaints you with all major forms of media and gives you the opportunity to sharpen your skills working in an active-learning, hands-on environment. Develop expertise with print, radio, television, and news media through the lens of ethics, contemporary issues, industry standards, and learning experiences.

Morningside University’s location in Sioux City gives students ample opportunity for internships at network-affiliated television stations, radio stations, newspapers, advertising or public relations firms, and many more.

Research & Active Learning

The Multimedia Communication department is home to a student-run radio station, cable television channel, and online news source that both majors and non-majors can take part in to build experience.

Travel

You will have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally, and even internationally for professional conferences, industry field trips, or May Term courses. Travel grants and special scholarship eligibility may be available.

FEATURED COURSES

REQUIRED

An introduction to Audio Production, specifically as it applies to use of audio in digital platforms, such as websites, social media, etc. Students produce projects designed to acquaint them with the genres, styles and production techniques of audio in various media. Live broadcasts on KMSC are required.

REQUIRED

An introduction to Video Production specifically as it applies to use of video in digital platforms, such as website, social media, etc. This course will include discussions of various types of cameras, light, sound, and nonlinear editing during preproduction, production and post production.

REQUIRED

Study of First Amendment issues, including libel and privacy. The course develops an important area of knowledge for persons planning careers in mass communication, but will also be of interest to media consumers because of the role law plays in shaping media content.

ELECTIVE

Principles and practice of public relations in commercial and non-commercial fields; publicity and promotion campaigns emphasized.

Multimedia Communication has a rich history of alumni graduating and finding success in the industry. Alumni have taken positions as news anchors at television stations, radio hosts, broadcast operations specialists, producers, and more across the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in media and communication occupations is projected to grow 6% from 2021 to 2031. Multimedia communication professionals with a bachelor’s degree can expect to find opportunities in various industries, including advertising, public relations, and digital marketing.
