PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This interdisciplinary degree provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to work within a nonprofit or public service organization. You will be equipped to help nonprofits fulfill their mission while making a difference in the world.

Internships

Each student completes a large capstone experience which involves direct work within a nonprofit organization, interaction with executive and board members, and a larger project that allows the student to utilize their skills for the good of the agency.

Travel

You will have the opportunity to travel regionally, nationally, and even internationally for professional conferences, industry field trips, or May Term courses. Travel grants and special scholarship eligibility may be available.

Independent studies and research opportunities are available depending on your unique interests and needs. Work with faculty to determine your best course of action.

REQUIRED

Principles and practice of public relations in commercial and non-commercial fields; publicity and promotion campaigns emphasized

REQUIRED

This course provides an overview of the various physical, cognitive, social, and psychological forces which shape human development from conception through death.

ELECTIVE

Satisfies Ethical Reasoning and Application Requirement. This course is a critical examination of major ethical theories and several contemporary moral and social issues. It begins by asking whether true answers to moral questions are possible, or whether ethics is just a matter of personal opinion. It then examines various methods for solving moral problems and applies defensible ethical theories to such contemporary issues as: abortion, capital punishment, war, terrorism, genetic engineering, cloning, homosexuality, and animal rights. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to articulate and clarify their personal values and ethics.

ELECTIVE

Students enrolled in this course will have the opportunity to participate in the study of the economic significance of advertising, the various media employed in advertising, and the components of an advertising campaign. Students will gain insight into the role of advertising in the overall business process and how advertising contributes to sales, revenues and profits.

Alumni of the Nonprofit Management program have taken positions with a wide variety of nonprofit and service organizations throughout Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and the United States. A number of alumni are also enrolled in graduate programs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for social and community service managers is expected to grow by 18% through 2026.
