Morningside College students and faculty will share writing about their semester in Italy at noon Friday, Oct. 7, at Morningside College in the Hickman Dining Room of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.
The event is part of the Friday is Writing Day (FIWD) series at Morningside College. FIWD meets throughout the fall semester, usually from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Fridays. The program, which has been in existence for almost 30 years, is designed to feature writers and their works, from journals to published pieces.
Writers of all types from the campus and community read their work, followed by informal discussions of the writing. All of the sessions are free and open to the public. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or purchase lunch in the college cafeteria.
Additional upcoming events for FIWD include:
Sept. 30 – The Art of Writing Personal Statements. Graduate school and scholarship applications often ask for an essay highlighting a person’s potential and promise. Students will read from their personal statements and share tips. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Oct. 21 – A Conversation with the Rev. Robert Koopmann, Order of Saint Benedict. Koopmann will be on campus for two weeks as part of the Dimmitt Fellows program. He is a professor of music and president emeritus of College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in St. Joseph and Collegeville, Minn. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Oct. 28 – Political Campaign Writing. Inspirational, informative, thought-provoking or outrageous – bring examples of presidential campaign writing. Local political gurus Patrick McKinlay, Valerie Hennings and Greg Guelcher will be there to provide background and perspective. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Nov. 4 – Writing about Leadership. Mary Zink’s senior and first-year students will share writing on behaviors of leaders, how to develop leadership and historical leaders. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Nov. 11 – Reimagining Literature. Jeremy Schnieder’s students from the course Literature and Society will present translations of literary works into other artistic forms. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Tuesday, Nov. 15 – Marathon Reading/Viewing/Performing of Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Experience the musical at Morningside through reading, watching YouTube and listening to performers. 7 to 9:30 p.m., Roadman Formal Lounge, Roadman Hall, 3600 Peters Ave.
Nov. 18 – Celebration of Steve Coyne’s New Book. The Morningside professor will read from his new, award-winning book, “It Turns Out Like This,” and talk about the road to publication. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Dec. 2 – Things, Things and More Things: Exploring America’s Material Culture. Students from Chris Triezenberg’s American Literature and Culture class will share research projects about texts and objects that shaped American culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
Dec. 9 – Jane Austen: 200 Years as a Literary and Popular Culture Icon. Students from Marty Knepper’s Jane Austen: Fiction and Film Seminar read from their research projects. Noon, Hickman Dining Room, Olsen Student Center.
