Women’s golf team pockets third straight title
Morningside’s women’s golf team won the Bellevue Fall Invite for its third straight tournament championship.
Morningside’s women’s golf team won its third straight tournament championship and pocketed its fourth title of the season when the Mustangs edged tournament host Bellevue University by one stroke to win the weather shortened Bellevue Fall Invite at The Pines Country Club in Valley, Neb.
The Mustangs carded a team score of 308 in Monday’s opening round for a one-stroke lead in the nine-team field. Tuesday’s second round was canceled after heavy rainfall made the course unplayable.
Maria Zorrilla, a freshman from Coahuila, Mexico, led the Mustangs with a one-over par 73 to finish one stroke off the medalist pace of Iowa Western Community College’s Cassidy Evreniadis, who topped the 51-player field with a 72.
The Mustangs also had top 10 individual finishes from Myla Brown, a junior from Sioux Falls, S.D., who finished sixth with a 76, and Samantha Knight, a freshman from Onawa, Iowa, who was 10th with a 77. The 76 by Brown was her lowest score of the season.
Mikaela Livengood, a junior from Eagle Grove, Iowa, completed the Mustangs’ team score with an 82.
The Bellevue Invite was the third straight tournament championship for the Mustangs, who were coming off victories at the Briar Cliff Lila Frommelt Fall Classic and the College of Saint Mary Fall Classic. Morningside, which opened the campaign with a win at the Mount Marty College Fall Invite, will wrap up the fall season at the GPAC Fall Qualifier on Oct. 9 and 10 in Vermillion, S.D.
