Jay Welp is the GPAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Jay Welp, a senior from Marcus, Iowa, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for Feb. 9-15.

Welp won two events in fields comprised mostly of NCAA Division I and II athletes at last weekend’s South Dakota State University Indoor Classic in Brookings. Welp won the 1000-meters with a time of 2:27.20 and the mile with a time of 4:11.86 and broke school records in both events. His time in the 1000-meters erased the former Morningside standard of 2:27.33 by Monte Larsen in 2013 and his time in the mile shattered the former Mustang record of 4:15.24 by Taylor Chapman in 2013. Welp’s time in the 1000-meters also broke the existing Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex facility record.

Welp’s time in the 1000-meters is the second fastest in the NAIA this season, while his time in the mile is fourth fastest in the NAIA.
