Brandon Wegher is the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Brandon Wegher, a 5-11, 210 lb. junior running back from Dakota Dunes, S.D., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday’s 72-2 victory against Dordt College.

Wegher rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns in 24 attempts for an average of 8.8 yards per carry for the fifth highest single-game rushing yardage total in Morningside history. His longest run from scrimmage was a 51-yard touchdown dash with 7:55 left in the first quarter. Wegher added a two-yard touchdown run at the 13:38 mark of the second quarter. He also had three pass receptions for 20 yards.

Wegher has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the Mustangs’ first three contests. Wegher ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 56-14 victory against Valley City State University and then ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns in an 83-19 triumph against Nebraska Wesleyan University. Wegher has rushed for 578 yards and eight touchdowns in 57 attempts for an average of 10.1 yards per carry. Wegher leads the nation in rushing with an average of 192.7 yards per game and also tops the nation in scoring with 54 points for an average of 18.0 points per contest.

Wegher has rushed for 1783 yards and 17 touchdowns during his Morningside career for the fourth highest rushing yardage total in school history. He is 89 yards behind the third place total of 1872 yards by Tyler Childress, who played at Morningside from 2005-08. Wegher needs 217 more yards to become the third 2000-yard runner in Morningside history. Wegher has rushed for over 100 yards seven times in his Morningside career, including a pair of 200-yard performances.

Morningside, ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NAIA, will host Midland University in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 4, for Homecoming 2014.
