Two Morningside College students have been selected to participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival’s annual Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition.
Amy Carothers of Fort Myers, Fla., and Allison Linafelter of Sioux City were nominated after a theater festival representative saw their performances in Morningside’s recent production of “Quilters” written by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek. Carothers and Linafelter played two of the six daughters of a pioneer woman in the production.
“I am looking forward to working with each of them to prepare for the competition,” said Taylor Clemens, assistant professor of theater at Morningside, who directed the “Quilters” production. “It is a very exciting opportunity for them as well as Morningside College. Amy and Allison will represent Morningside against some of the best young actors in the Midwest. I am very confident they will make us all proud. “
Carothers and Linafelter will compete in January at the regional festival in Des Moines, Iowa, against other selected students from colleges and universities throughout the Midwest. They will compete separately for a $500 scholarship and the chance to go to the national scholarship competition in Washington, D.C., where the top award is a $5,000 scholarship.
