Kati Steffen and Jordan Johnson are the GPAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Kati Steffen

Kati Steffen, a senior first baseman from Moville, Iowa, and Jordan Johnson, a senior pitcher from Sioux City, have been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 7-13.

The two players helped the Mustangs extend their winning streak to 15 games and open a commanding lead atop the GPAC softball standings. Morningside has a 20-6 record, including a perfect 10-0 mark in the GPAC for a three-game lead over second place Concordia University.

Steffen collected 11 hits in 25 at-bats for a .440 batting average in the Mustangs’ seven contests last week. She had two doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBIs. Steffen went four-for-four with a home run, a double, and two RBIs in a 14-0 victory against Northwestern College on April 10. Steffen also hit home runs in wins against Briar Cliff University and Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Jordan Johnson

Steffen is hitting .403 for the season and leads the Mustangs with five home runs and 19 RBIs.

Johnson was the winning pitcher in five of the Mustangs’ seven victories last week, including a four-hit shutout against Briar Cliff University, a three-hit shutout against Northwestern, and a nine-inning seven-hit shutout against Concordia. She allowed only two runs and 15 hits in 30 innings for a microscopic 0.23 earned run average. Aside from her pitching exploits, Johnson also batted .400 for the week and accounted for the only run with a ninth inning home run in the Mustangs’ 1-0 victory in the first game of last Saturday’s GPAC showdown with Concordia.

Johnson has a 0.71 earned run average in 69.1 innings over her last 11 appearances. She has a 12-3 record with a 2.15 earned run average for the season.
