Morningside landed four wrestlers on the All-GPAC team, including two freshmen on the first team.

Morningside College’s Steven Garcia and Jay Sornson were both named to the 2015 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Wrestling First Team as selected by the league’s head coach.

In addition to their two first-team selections, the Mustangs also placed Rulin Pederson and Alex Schmitz on the All-GPAC Second Team.

Garcia, a freshman 149 pounder from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, has a 25-11 record with three falls for the Mustangs’ second highest victory total. Garcia, one of five Morningside qualifiers for the upcoming NAIA Wrestling National Championships, had a perfect 7-0 record in the Mustangs’ seven GPAC duals.

Sornson, a freshman 165 pounder from Nebraska City, Neb., has a 19-6 record with five falls. Sornson, a NAIA national qualifier, has a 13-2 record over his last 15 matches and had a 5-0 record in GPAC duals.

Pederson, a senior 184 pounder from Sioux City, has a 26-4 record with six falls to lead the Mustangs in victories and pins. Pederson had a 5-1 record in GPAC duals and is a qualifier for the NAIA National Championships, where he earned NAIA All-America honors last year with a sixth place finish in the 184 lb. division.

Schmitz, a freshman 133 pounder from Carroll, Iowa, has a 13-11 record with one fall. He had a 4-1 record in the Mustangs’ GPAC duals.

Morningside posted a 7-3 dual record during the 2014-15 season and finished second in the GPAC standings with a 6-1 league mark.
