Morningside College swimmers broke five school records on Friday at the Liberal Arts Championships swimming & diving meet in Elsah, Ill.

Connor Bjellum, a freshman from Fargo, N.D., had the Mustangs’ highest individual finish when he won on the men’s 200-yard freestyle with a school record time of 1:41.68.

Suzanna Gonzalez, a junior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., was the runner-up in the women’s 200-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 1:54.72 and teammate Evelyn Edge, a senior from Genoa City, Wis., finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:59.50.

Jake Kohorst, a freshman from Elk River, Minn., set a school record in the men’s 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.60 seconds and Kyler Alme, a freshman from Bismarck, N.D., set a school record in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.50.

The Mustangs set a school record in the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, where Gonzalez, Ally Hecht, a freshman from Leavenworth, Kan.; Tracy Gates, a senior from Escondido, Calif., and Edge combined for a fifth place time of 8:10.13.

Morningside had two top 10 finishers in the men’s 100-yard butterfly, where Billy Salber, a freshman from Omaha, Neb., finished fifth with a time of 51.94 seconds, and Timothy Cohoon, a sophomore from Buffalo, Wyo., finished ninth with a time of 54.35.

Alisia Woodward, a sophomore from Waterloo, Iowa, finished eighth in the women’s 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:15.26.

The Mustangs finished fifth in the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.99 from the quartet of Kohorst, Alme, Salber and John Dieter, a junior from Carroll, Iowa.

Veronica Mullen, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb.; Jessyca Huff, a freshman from Castle Rock, Colo.; Gonzalez and Edge combined for a seventh place time of 1:56.75 in the women’s 200-yard medley relay.

The Liberal Arts Championships will conclude on Saturday.
