Mustangs announce women’s swimming recruits
Morningside swimming head coach Bryan Farris announced the names of nine women’s swimmers who will join the Mustangs for the 2016-17 season.
Morningside College head men’s and women’s swimming coach Bryan Farris announced the names of nine female recruits who will join the Mustangs for the 2016-17 season.
The headliner is Suzanna Gonzalez, a freestyler from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., who will join the Mustangs with junior eligibility as a transfer from Golden West Community College. Gonzalez was the 1650-yard freestyle champion at the 2016 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Swimming & Diving Championships with a time of 17:22.46, a time that is almost 33 seconds faster than Morningside’s existing school record of 17:55.16 and a time that would rank among the NAIA national leaders each year.
As a freshman, Gonzalez was the 2015 Orange Empire Conference (OEC) Co-Female Swimmer of the Year after she helped lead her team to the OEC championship. Gonzalez was the OEC 1650-yard freestyle champion with a time of 17:42.03 and helped lead Golden West to a runner-up finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Gonzalez won the 1650-yard freestyle, placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, and helped lead Golden West to a second place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay at the 2015 CCCAA Championships.
Gonzalez is a 2014 graduate of Tesora High School.
The Mustangs’ female recruiting class also includes:
Deborah Cvrk of Sioux City, who will compete in the backstroke and freestyle events. Cvrk has competed for the Siouxland Sharks swim club.
Rae Clinkenbeard of Denison, Iowa, who will compete in the butterfly and freestyle events. Clinkenbeard has competed for the Denison Stingrays swim club.
Riley Custer of Gilbert, Ariz., who will compete in the breaststroke and freestyle events. Custer is a 2016 graduate of Williams Field High School, where she was a state qualifier and her team’s top swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke.
Cassidy Fox of Spencer, Iowa, who will compete in the breaststroke and individual medley. Fox is a 2016 graduate of Spencer High School, where she helped lead the school to a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay at this past season’s Fort Dodge regional and to a 13th place finish at the state meet. Fox finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.55 and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.74 at the Fort Dodge regional.
Ally Hecht, a distance freestyler from Leavenworth, Kan. Hecht is a 2016 graduate of Lansing High School and sister of former Morningside swimmer Hannah Hecht, a four-year letterwinner for the Mustangs who graduated in 2015.
Jaymie Huff, a freestyler from Castle Rock, Colo. Huff is a 2016 graduate of Douglas County High School, where she was a state qualifier in freestyle relays during her prep career. Huff also competed for the Colorado Athletic Club USA swim team.
Jessyca Huff of Castle Rock, Colo., who will compete in the breaststroke and freestyle events. Huff is a 2016 graduate of Douglas County High School, where she was a Class 5A state qualifier in the 100-yard breaststroke. Huff swam a time of 1:11.33 in the 100-yard breaststroke prelims at this past season’s state meet.
Brianna Reynolds of Marshalltown, Iowa, who will compete in the backstroke, individual medley, and freestyle events. Reynolds is a 2016 graduate of Marshalltown High School.
