Waterloo West point guard JaCory Spates will join the Mustangs’ men’s basketball team next season.

JaCory Spates, a 6-0 point guard from Waterloo, Iowa, will enroll at Morningside College next fall and compete for the Mustangs’ men’s basketball team announced Morningside men’s basketball head coach Jim Sykes.

Spates is currently a senior at Waterloo West High School, where he is averaging 8.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. Spates leads the Wahawks with 33 assists and is second on the team with 17 steals.

He averaged 7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game as a junior.

Spates will join a Morningside men’s basketball program that has produced six 20-win seasons and made five NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances over the last 11 years. The Mustangs have won four Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season championships and two GPAC Post-Season Tournament championships under Sykes, who has won a school-record 251 games during his men’s basketball coaching career at Morningside.
