Defending GPAC Women’s Soccer Tournament champion Morningside advanced to this year’s semifinals when it outscored Northwestern 6-5 in a shootout in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round action at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

The teams went to a shootout after they battled to a scoreless double overtime tie.

Morningside will travel to Hastings, Neb., on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against 10th-ranked Hastings in the semifinals.

Both teams failed to find the net on each of their first three penalty kicks in the shootout before Morningside was successful on six straight kicks by Mackenzie Muir, Makenzi Miller, Whitney Ferguson, Kristina Sorenson, Kylee Goodvin, and Chloe Wetzbarger. Northwestern answered with five straight successful kicks, but was unable to answer Wetzbarger’s decisive kick.

Tuesday’s quarterfinal between Morningside and Northwestern was similar to the Mustangs’ 1-0 win against the Red Raiders during the regular season when the game’s only goal came on a penalty kick by Amy Grause.

Morningside outshot the Red Raiders by a convincing 18-8 margin in the GPAC Quarterfinals, but Northwestern goal keeper Naomi Schimmel kept her team in the game with eight saves.

The Mustangs’ Niccole McGuire came up with three saves while posting her fifth shutout of the season.

Morningside will take a 9-7-2 record into Saturday’s GPAC Semifinal at Hastings.
