Morningside’s men’s golf team finished in eighth place at Thursday’s GPAC Qualifier #2 held at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.

The Mustangs carded a team score of 312 to finish just eight shots out of third place. In fact, a total of only 16 strokes separated the top eight teams in the field.

Northwestern topped the 11-team field with a 296 and was the only team to break 300.

Freshman Ferran Cortilla led the Mustangs with a two-over par 73 to finish in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings. Cortilla finished three strokes behind Midland’s Renen Sahr, who captured medalist honors with a one-under par 70.

Zach Ward also broke 80 for the Mustangs with a 78. Morningside completed its score with an 80 from Cody Holck and an 81 from Ben Schwaderer.

The combined totals from the two GPAC Qualifier tournaments in the fall and two more in the spring will determine the 2015-16 GPAC individual and team champion. Morningside is tied with Hastings for sixth place with team totals of 610 after the completion of the two fall GPAC Qualifiers.

Cortilla is fifth in the individual standings after rounds of 74 and 73 for a 147. Zach Ward is also in the top 10 after rounds of 72 and 78 for a 150.
