The GPAC women’s soccer coaches have tabbed Morningside for a runner-up finish in this year’s league race.

The Mustangs received three first place votes and were picked second in the GPAC Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The Mustangs received 92 points to trail two-time defending champion Hastings with 98 points. The Broncos, who have claimed five of the last six GPAC regular season crowns, received the other eight first place votes from the league’s 11 head coaches.

Morningside returns 20 letter winners, including 10 starters, from a team that posted a 15-6-1 record and defeated Concordia 2-1 in the GPAC Postseason Tournament Championship Game to earn a berth in the 2015 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship tournament. The Mustangs finished second in last year’s GPAC regular season standings with an 8-3 league record.

The Mustangs will open the 2016 season with a 1 p.m. contest against Presentation College on Saturday, Aug. 27, in Aberdeen, S.D.
