Morningside’s cheer and dance teams finished as the runner-ups at the NAIA Northwest Group Qualifier tournament.

Morningside’s cheer and dance teams both finished as the runner-up at Friday’s NAIA Competitive Cheer & Dance Northwest Group Qualifier Tournament in Baldwin City, Kan.

The Mustangs’ GPAC championship cheer team finished second behind MidAmerica Nazarene of the Heart of America Conference in the 11-team cheer division. Morningside posted a score of 70.6375 to finish less than three points behind the Pioneers’ winning score of 73.4.

Morningside finished second in the 10-team dance division behind GPAC rival Midland. The Mustangs compiled a score of 83.3125 to finish behind Midland’s score of 89.875.

The cheer and dance champions from the four NAIA Group Qualifier Tournaments earn automatic berths in the 2017 NAIA Competitive Cheer & Dance National Championships to be held March 10-11 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Eight at-large qualifiers in both cheer and dance for the 2017 NAIA National Championships will be announced on Sunday, Feb. 26. The at-large selections are based on team scores from the four NAIA group qualifier tournaments.
