Morningside College will open its 2015-16 piano recital series with Korean-born pianist Yekwon Sunwoo at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, in Eppley Auditorium.

Morningside College will open its 2015-16 piano recital series with Korean-born pianist Yekwon Sunwoo at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.

The performance is free and open to the public. The recital will include works by Schubert, Ravel, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff.

Sunwoo has performed as a soloist with a number of orchestras including The Juilliard Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Belgium, Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra and Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra.

Praised by critics and audience members alike, Sunwoo has won numerous international piano competitions, including the 2014 Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the 2013 Sendai International Music Competition in Japan, the 2012 Piano Campus International Concours in France, and the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition at the University of Maryland. In his most recent win, the International German Piano Competition, Sunwoo garnered 20,000 euros in addition to performances in prestigious European venues.

Sunwoo has performed at Carnegie Hall. He also has performed for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He received his master’s degree from The Juilliard School, where he won the Munz Scholarship and received the Arthur Rubinstein Prize. He recorded his first solo album on the Fontec label in 2014.
