Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, recently presented her research at the American Academy in Rome as part of her fellowship there, and she traveled to Cyprus to give the keynote address at a symposium.

Her presentation at the American Academy in Rome was “Philostratus’ Gymnasticus: The Ethics of an Athletic Aesthetic.” It was streamed live over the web.

Her keynote address in Nicosia, Cyprus, was at a symposium on ethics and doping in sport that was sponsored by the Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority and Cyprus National Bioethics Committee. She gave that talk partially in Greek.

Reid was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Rome Prize in Ancient Studies from the American Academy in Rome. As part of the fellowship, she is living, studying and conducting research there from September 2014 through July 2015.

Reid is a specialist in ancient philosophy and the philosophy of sport. She has published six books related to sports philosophy and the Olympics. The American Academy in Rome, founded in 1894, is the oldest American overseas center for independent study and advanced research in the arts and humanities.
