The Morningside football team traveled to Mitchell, S.D. to take on the Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 15.

The first quarter saw junior Jacob Harvey get on the scoreboard first with a 2-yard run and a kick by senior Jared Amundson to start Morningside off 7-0. Sophomore Reid Jurgensmeier connected a 16-year pass from Senior quarterback Trent Solsma to bring the score 14-0. Tate Gale from DWU added to the scoreboard with a 39-yard field goal to bring the score 14-3. Solsma connected to long time teammate senior Connor Niles with a 1 yard pass and another kick by Amundson, 21-3 to finish the first quarter.

            The Solsma/Niles combo stayed on a roll to add two more touchdowns in the second quarter as well as a 52-yard touchdown run by Jacob Harvey. Jared Amundson kicked an astounding 34-yard field goal which brought the score to 45-10 at halftime.

            The third quarter brought an amazing 75-yard pass from Trent Solsma to connect to Austin Johnson for a touchdown to bring the already gapped score to 52-10. Junior Klayton Nordeen also added to the score with a 30-yard interception return. Finally, sophomore Jared Myers caught a 19-yard pass from Solsma and a final field goal from Amundson to end the game 66-13.

            Senior Trent Solsma passed for 428 yards and six touchdowns. The Mustangs defense held the Tigers to 13 points with three sacks and two interceptions. Junior Bo Els had seven catches for 50 yards and Connor Niles had 15 catches for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

            The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 22 at home against Briar Cliff University.
