Jazz trombonist Marshall Gilkes and trombone quartet Resonant Projection will serve as guest artists for the 19th Annual Siouxland Trombone Festival on Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17, at Morningside College in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.

There will be a concert at 7 p.m. April 16 featuring the guest artists. Then on April 17, students and the guest artists will perform at 6:30 p.m., with Gilkes and the Siouxland All-Star Big Band performing at 8:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public, though donations are appreciated.

Gilkes has been named a “Rising Star” the past four years in Downbeat magazine’s annual critics poll. He is a former member of the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. He has released three critically acclaimed albums that showcase his composition style, which has been called “supremely artful.”

Resonant Projection features Paul Compton from Oklahoma State University; Josh Bynum from University of Georgia; Brian Conklin from Dallas, Texas; and Tony Hutchins from Morningside College. The quartet has performed all over the country, most recently at last year’s Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington, D.C.

The Siouxland Trombone Festival brings together high school and college trombone players to rehearse and to work with guest artists.
