Morningside College will present a fully staged production of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into the Woods” March 19-22 and March 26-29 in Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Ave., on the Morningside campus.

Morningside College will present a fully staged production of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into the Woods” March 19-22 and March 26-29 in Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Ave., on the Morningside campus.

Performance times are 7 p.m. March 19-21 and March 26-28. Matinee performances are 2 p.m. on March 22 and 29. The March 22 matinee will be sign language interpreted. All performances are free and open to the public. Free seats can be reserved by calling 712-274-5702 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Tony Award winning musical follows a childless baker and his wife into the woods as they encounter Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and other fairy tale characters. In a modern twist on classic fairy tales, the characters eventually must deal with the consequences of having their wishes granted.

The cast, which features Morningside students and Sioux City area residents, includes guest artist Lisa Crosby Wipperling of Sioux City in the role of The Witch. Wipperling is a graduate of Morningside College and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. She has appeared in a variety of theatrical productions in New York City and in regional playhouses.

Jerry Ditter, assistant professor of theatre at Morningside, is directing “Into the Woods.” Other production staff members include Steve Lundberg, vocal coach; Kate Saulsbury, vocal coach; Donny Short, music director/conductor; and Bette Skewis-Arnett, costume designer. Hazel Rose Gibson, a recent graduate of Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, is guest stage manager.

The production is part of the Betty Ling Tsang Fine Arts Series at Morningside College. The Gilchrist Foundation and the Iowa Arts Council provided additional funding for “Into the Woods.”
