Morningside College begins the seventh summer season of its Betty Ling Tsang Fine Arts Series with the musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at 7 p.m. on June 6 and 7 in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center, 3625 Garretson Ave., on the college’s campus.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is set in ancient Rome and features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.  Using elements of farce and classic vaudeville, the musical follows the struggles of a crafty slave who tries to earn his freedom by facilitating a romance between his master and a beautiful courtesan.

The Morningside production is directed by Donny Short III with Robert Barry as musical director, Catherine Pratt as stage manager and Karen Sowienski as costume designer.

In the event of rain, performances move to Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave., on the Morningside campus.

Other productions scheduled for the summer Betty Ling Tsang Fine Arts Series include a holiday pops concert with the Sioux City Symphony on June 28; the children’s musical “Honk!” on July 18 and 19; the children’s performance “Snow White & The Missing Dwarfs” on July 25 and 26; and the musical revue “Putting It Together” on August 8 and 9. All performances are free and open to the public.

Construction on the Morningside campus restricts parking near, and access to, the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center. Parking is available behind the Olsen Student Center on Peters Avenue, the Lewis Hall visitor lot, the Facilities Services lot along Garretson Avenue, the east portion of the Grace United Methodist Church lot and the Eppley Auditorium lot.
