Matthey is GPAC Golfer of the Year
Corey Matthey was named the GPAC Men’s Golfer of the Year to headline the All-GPAC Men’s Golf Team.
Corey Matthey, a freshman from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, is the 2017 Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Golfer of the Year to headline the 2017 All-GPAC Men’s Golf Team.
Matthey was the overall medalist from the GPAC’s Fall and Spring Qualifier tournaments with a 72-hole total of 302 strokes to win the title by a three-stroke margin over runner-ups Tom Hogg of Dakota Wesleyan University and Joe Vest of Midland University. The GPAC individual championship earned Matthey a berth in the 2017 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship to be held May 16-19 at TPC Deer Run in Moline, Ill.
Matthey was a model of consistency throughout the 2016-17 season. He had a 74.6-stroke scoring average during the Mustangs’ fall season and led the team with a 74.6-stroke average during the spring. His low round of the season was a two-under par 70 on April 12 in the first round of the Briar Cliff University Invitational.
In addition to Matthey, the Mustangs placed Ferran Cortilla and Cody Holck on the All-GPAC Team.
Cortilla, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, finished fourth in the GPAC individual standings with 306 strokes. Cortilla had a 75.7-stroke scoring average in the fall and a 76.0 average in the spring for an overall average of 75.9.
Holck, a sophomore from Ankeny, Iowa, finished 13th in the final GPAC individual standings with a score of 314. Holck had a 75.2-stroke average in the fall and a 77.9 average in the spring for an overall average of 76.5.
