Bishop Deborah L. Kiesey will present a lecture titled “Leadership in the Wesleyan Spirit” at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 in UPS Auditorium in Morningside College’s Lincoln Center, 3627 Peters Ave.

The lecture will focus on leadership and civility and emphasize that effective leadership includes positively engaging people from all backgrounds and ranges of opinion. The Connie Wimer Women’s Leadership Program and the Col. Bud Day Center for Civic Engagement, both based at Morningside College, are sponsoring the lecture.

Bishop Kiesey, who is retired from active ministry with the United Methodist Church (UMC), lives in Iowa City, Iowa. She is a Morningside graduate and serves on the Morningside College Board of Directors. She became the first female bishop of the UMC’s Dakotas Annual Conference in 2004 and served the Michigan Area (Detroit and West Michigan conferences) from 2012 to 2016.

Bishop Kiesey is the recipient of honorary degrees from Morningside College, Iowa Wesleyan College and Dakota Wesleyan College. She also has received alumna awards from Morningside and Boston University School of Theology.
