Katie Hanson, a junior from Saint Peter, Minn., and Kathryn Jones, a sophomore from Laramie, Wyo., won the No. 1 doubles title at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Fall Doubles Tournament held Saturday in Fremont, Neb.

Hanson and Jones won all three of their matches in the round robin tourney. They defeated Midland University’s Jordane Warkentin and Whitney Schutt 9-8 (9-7), Doane College’s Tia Norris and Torey Kogel 8-3, and Hastings College’s Liz Harlow and Maddie Shelton 8-3.

Ironically, Hanson and Jones had a 0-4 doubles record this fall prior to the tournament.

Morningside’s Cassie Stanek, a sophomore from Sioux City, and Megan Carlson, a sophomore from Cherokee, Iowa, had a 2-1 record to finish second in the second flight, while Megan Solberg, a senior from Mitchell, S.D., and Katherine Lai, a freshman from Storm Lake, Iowa, finished second in the third flight with a 2-1 record.

Morningside, Doane, and Hastings all had 2-1 records in the men’s No.4 doubles bracket. Morningside used three players in the fourth flight. The Mustangs’ duo of Andrew Ites, a sophomore from Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Joe Kruger, a freshman from Slater, Iowa, won an 8-6 verdict against Midland’s team of Alex Drews and Kody Drews. Hunter Renn, a junior from Mason City, Iowa, and Kruger lost 9-7 against Doane’s tandem of Nick Hamilton and Keagan Hill. Ites and Kruger won their match 8-3 against Hastings’ team of Brian (no last name available) and Levi Cermak.
