Suzanna Gonzalez is Morningside’s first-ever NAIA Swimmer/Diver of the Month.

Suzanna Gonzalez, a junior from Trabuco Canyon, Calif., is the NAIA Women’s Swimmer/Diver of the Month for Jan. 16 to Feb. 12.

She is the first Morningside swimmer in history to receive the award.

Gonzalez was the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet at last week’s Liberal Arts Championships in Elsah, Ill., after she broke four Morningside records and won two events with triumphs in the 500 and 1650-yard freestyles. She won the 500-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 5:01.43 and reigned in the 1650-yard freestyle with a school-record and meet-record time of 17:32.53. She broke the Mustangs’ record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:31.89 split during her victory in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Gonzalez also set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle when she finished second with a time of 1:54.72 and she helped the Mustangs break their school record in the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay when she combined with Ally Hecht, Tracy Gates and Evelyn Edge for a fifth place time of 8:10.13.

Gonzalez had set the previous Morningside records in the 200, 500 and 1000-yard freestyles one week earlier while competing in the Minnesota Challenge in Saint Paul, Minn., where she was the champion in the 1650-yard freestyle and the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle.

Her times of 5:01.43 in the 500-yard freestyle and 17:32.53 in the 1650-yard freestyle are the second fastest times in the NAIA this season.
