Morningside College’s men’s golf team defeated reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champion Northwestern College by eight strokes to take top honors at the GPAC Fall Qualifier tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Mustangs carded a team score of 569 over the two rounds for a collective team score of one-over par. Northwestern finished second in the 10-team field with a 577 and first round leader Doane University finished third at 579.

Doane shot a 283 in the opening round for a three-stroke lead over Morningside and Northwestern, who tied for second at 286. The Mustangs finished with a second round 283 for the best score of the day.

Morningside’s Cody Holck, a junior from Ankeny, Iowa, was the tournament’s individual medalist with a three-under par 139. Holck shot a one-under par 70 on Monday before he closed with a two-under 69 for the top individual Tuesday score.

Matt McGhee

Corey Matthey, a sophomore from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, finished third with rounds of 71 and 70 for a one-under par 141. Matt McGhee, a sophomore from London, Canada, finished fifth with rounds of 71 and 72 for a one-over par 143.

Jonathan Douglas, a freshman from Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, shot scores of 78 and 72 for a 150 and Ferran Cortilla, a junior from Barcelona, Spain, had rounds of 74 and 82 for a 156.

The GPAC Spring Qualifier will be held April 23 and 24 in Eagle, Neb. The team and individual champions from the combined scoring in the two qualifiers will represent the GPAC at the 2018 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship scheduled for May 15-18 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
