Jeremy Schnieder, assistant professor of writing and rhetoric at Morningside College, recently presented the paper “Running Over the Same Old Ground: Automated Essay Scoring” at the International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Automated essay scoring is a way to grade student papers completely electronically. The paper discussed how the current desire for computerized scoring of writing is actually similar to the answers tried before by assessment scholars. Schnieder argues that the methods of the past need to be understood before essay scoring can move forward to a better future.

Schnieder came to Morningside in fall of 2010. He received a Walker Faculty Excellence Award from Morningside College in 2011. He has a doctorate in rhetoric and writing from Bowling Green State University.
