Anthony Kern, associate professor of biology and academic chair of the Regina Roth Applied Agricultural and Food Studies Program at Morningside College, recently co-authored an article in the journal Agroforestry Systems.

The article, titled “Selection of American Hazelnut as a Potential Oilseed Crop,” was published with collaborators from the University of Wisconsin.  The article reviews the genetics of wild populations of the American hazelnut plant, as well as its overall production of healthy, monounsaturated fats.  The team of researchers is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture for its work on developing the hazelnut as a perennial crop for the northern Midwest.  For more information, go to www.midwesthazelnuts.org.

Kern joined the faculty in 2012 after serving 10 years on the faculty of Northland College in Ashland, Wis. He received a doctorate in plant genetics from Montana State University in Bozeman.
