Morningside has seven players record kills in 25-15, 25-13, 25-8 victory over Mount Marty.

Morningside’s women’s volleyball team had seven players record kills in its Sept. 26 match at Mount Marty.  The Mustangs, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, tallied 37 kills to the Lancers’ 19 as they advanced to 10-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. Morningside was on the favorable side of scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-8.

Morningside’s offense was run by junior setter Callie Alberico, who had 25 assists in the three set match.  She was also Morningside’s second leading attacker with seven kills.

“Callie did a great job getting everyone involved early in the match, which opened up gaps in Mount Marty’s defense the rest of the night,” stated the Mustangs head coach, Beth Donnelly.

Junior Emma Gerber led Morningside with nine kills, followed by Alberico with seven, and junior Madison Hartman with six kills.  Brittni Olson and Krista Zenk each contributed five kills on the night.

“I really liked how aggressive our offense was tonight,” said Donnelly.  “I think we got stronger as the match went on and that’s something we have been working on–staying in each play and not getting complacent.”

Gerber was one of two Mustangs with solo blocks in the match. Olson secured the other.  Morningside also had three team blocks on the night. Morningside had zero blocking errors on the night.

The Mustangs amassed 42 digs in the quick match, with freshman libero Kayla Harris taking 14 for herself.  Sophomore Ashley Boer tallied six.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 29, visiting cross-town rival, Briar Cliff at 7 p.m.
