Xavier Spann was named the GPAC Defensive Player of the Week for his two-interception performance in the Mustangs’ blowout win against No. 21 Concordia.

Xavier Spann, a 6-1, 185 lb. sophomore defensive back from Lakeland, Fla., was named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday’s 55-13 victory against 21st-ranked Concordia University.

Spann’s defensive exploits helped the sixth-ranked Mustangs limit the Concordia passing game to 11 completions in 32 pass attempts. Spann had two of the Mustangs’ three interceptions and also had a pair of pass breakups. Spann’s first interception resulted in a touchdown when he picked off a T.J. Austin pass and returned the theft 21 yards to the end zone to give the Mustangs a 24-0 lead with 1:25 left in the first quarter. His second interception came late in the second quarter when he picked off a Riley Wiltfong pass at the Morningside five-yard line after the Bulldogs had driven to the Mustangs’ 33-yard line.

Spann is the Mustangs’ co-leader with two interceptions this season and is second on the team with three pass breakups.

Morningside will host fourth-ranked Doane University to a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
