Madison Braun became the 27th women’s basketball player in Morningside College history to score 1000 career points when she scored 11 points in the Mustangs’ 78-41 victory against Inter American University of Puerto Rico-San German in Monday’s action at the Porta Del Sol Shootout in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Aside from her 11 points, Braun also dealt a game-high five assists and contributed two steals and two rebounds to help the Mustangs improve their record to 10-5. Braun has scored 1001 points in her 89-game Morningside career for an average of 11.2 points per game.

The Mustangs, who went 2-0 at the Porta Del Sol Shootout, pressured Inter American into a dismal 26.3 percent shooting performance and dominated the boards with a 56-37 rebounding advantage.

Morningside raced to a 26-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 38-24 at the intermission. The Mustangs increased their lead to 57-37 after three quarters and finished things off with a 21-4 scoring differential over the final 10 minutes.

Lexi Ackerman poured in a game-high 20 points for the Mustangs behind an eight-for-11 shooting display, including a perfect four-for-four effort from the 3-point arc.

Freshman Sydney Hupp gave the Mustangs’ one of her most productive outings of the season with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench, while Braun and Jenna Bork each chipped in with 11 points. The 11 points by Bork was the top scoring effort of her Morningside career.

Hupp’s eight rebounds along with seven-board efforts by Lauren Lehmkuhl and Taylor Bahensky led the Mustangs to their rebounding advantage.

Morningside will host the Mustang Holiday Classic with games against 10th-ranked University of Jamestown on Dec. 29 and Haskell Indian Nations University on Dec. 30.
