An Update on the St. Luke’s College Transition to Morningside University
Sioux City, Iowa—Morningside University has officially acquired St. Luke’s College following approval from the Higher Learning Commission on November 11, 2025. Effective January 1, 2026, St. Luke’s College began functioning as an operating division of Morningside University. This strategic move aims to expand access to high-quality nursing and health sciences education while helping address critical healthcare workforce needs in Sioux City and the surrounding region.
The next step in this significant milestone is securing final regulatory approval from the U.S. Department of Education to complete the merger and consolidation. Until this federal approval is granted, Morningside University will continue to operate St. Luke’s College as a separate college. During this interim period, St. Luke’s will maintain its distinct degree authorization, accreditation, and federal student financial aid participation.
This acquisition represents a strategic investment in the future of the local healthcare infrastructure. University leadership noted that the community needs more nurses. This move addresses real needs in facilities, faculty capacity, infrastructure, and operational support. The decision was designed to benefit students by expanding access, improving support, and strengthening outcomes.
Moving forward, the university has established four key priorities. The primary goal is to meet the nursing workforce needs in Sioux City and the region. Simultaneously, leadership is focused on affordability and access, prioritizing cost-effective pathways to high-quality nursing careers because affordability impacts who can enter the profession. The university also plans to expand its partnership with UnityPoint Health to ensure students have strong clinical experiences. Finally, Morningside is committed to honoring the St. Luke’s legacy, a 127-year tradition with over 4,000 alumni.
In the near term, the focus is on integrating systems, support, and the student experience. Jackie Barber is leading this work and is partnering closely with the St. Luke’s team and university leadership. The university is investing in learning environments to ensure students receive training on tools and simulations that reflect today’s care settings. This transition is about strengthening what already exists and responding to urgent healthcare needs with care, transparency, and respect for St. Luke’s legacy.
