My name is Ryan Kost, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and I am a music education major. On campus, I am highly involved with the music department. I am in the Morningside Choir, Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia, and the National Association for Music Education. Outside of the music realm, I am the senator for Student Government, and I am a member of TIES- Teachers Inspired.
Morningside was the first school I toured, and after setting foot on campus, I was blown away. The sense of community on campus, especially in the music department, is so comforting. After touring other schools, I realized people weren’t lying when they said Morningside felt like home. The culture and community here are truly special.
When you come to college, my biggest piece of advice is to stay involved. You don’t have to do everything, but as long as you find one thing you like and stick with it. Being a part of something on campus gives you a break from your class schedule and gives you a reason to get out of your dorm room and meet new people. It allows you to make lifelong friendships and helps teach you new things about yourself. Being around people with the same interests and goals as you is rewarding.
Don’t be scared of stepping outside of your comfort zone. When I first came to Morningside, I struggled with stage fright, and since being here, I have realized that I can do things. My voice teacher, Dr Adam Webb, has not only helped me strengthen my singing voice, but he has also helped me overcome my stage fright. He encouraged me to read a book about stage fright, and it changed my perspective on a lot of things. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to, so dive in and go for the things you want.
