During her time at Morningside, Kari majored in corporate communications, a new program at the time, and became one of its first graduates. Her academic journey was enriched by the university’s emphasis on experiential learning and interdisciplinary exploration. Kari fondly recalls classes like Reasons, Beliefs, and Values with Professor Forbes, which challenged her to think critically and step outside her comfort zone. She also credits Professor Pam Mickelson on the business side for shaping her academic experience.
Beyond academics, Kari was deeply involved in campus life. From working in admissions to competing in track and field, she embraced the full college experience. “Living on campus all four years and being part of the close-knit track team created some of my favorite memories,” she shared.
After graduating in 2003, Kari’s connection to Morningside only deepened. She applied for a position in the institutional advancement office. What began as a development officer role turned into an 18-year career, during which Kari played a pivotal role in raising nearly $100 million for the university. She witnessed and contributed to the transformation of Morningside’s campus under the leadership of President John Reynders.
Reflecting on her time in advancement, Kari expressed pride in being part of a team that helped shape Morningside’s future. “It was amazing to see the campus transform into a completely different place than when Erin and I attended. My youngest sister, Abby, who came to Morningside eight years later, had a completely different experience, but both were fantastic in their own ways.”
Today, Kari has transitioned from higher education to healthcare, working with UnityPoint Health (UPH). Despite the career shift, her passion for Morningside remains strong. She’s particularly excited about the recent transaction with St. Luke’s College, which she believes will further elevate Morningside’s renowned nursing program. “I know it’s in great hands with leaders like Jackie Barber, who has taken the program to new heights,” Kari said.
When asked for advice for current students, Kari emphasized the importance of exploration and cultural immersion. “Try as many things as you can, and if you have the opportunity to travel or study abroad, take it. It’s a unique experience that helps you understand cultural differences and prepares you for life.”
Kari’s own study abroad experience, a summer in Chile and Peru living with host families, was a transformative moment that shaped her perspective. While opportunities to study abroad were limited during her time at Morningside, she’s thrilled to see how much the university has expanded these programs for today’s students.
Kari’s journey is a testament to the power of embracing opportunities, building connections, and contributing to meaningful change. Her story continues to inspire the Morningside community, reminding us all of the lasting impact of a Morningside education.
