My name is Danny Saldana, and I’m a sophomore majoring in elementary education. I’m involved on campus through WOO Crew and peer mentoring, and I serve as an RA at the Plex. I also represent students as a senator in Morningside’s student government. Additionally, I serve as the president of Dorms and Dragons, a member of the Public Speaking Arts group, and the treasurer of Aspiring Educators. I also participate in the Junior Professional Learning Community for the Sharon Walker School of Education.

Students new to Morningside should take advantage of everything they want to while they’re here. Something I regret is not getting out more during my first semester. I waited until the second semester of my freshman year to get involved. Once I finally got involved, I realized how nice it can feel to be part of something and how proud of myself I was for the impact I had made. That’s why I want to be a teacher.

Morningside’s community has had a big impact on me. For example, the first people to approach me and really make me feel included were my upperclassmen, who have graduated now, and I’m so happy for them. I’m sad to see that they’re gone, but they left that influence on me. They pulled me into their groups, made me feel like I could be something. That I could be more than I thought I was, and that really helped both my self-esteem and my sense that I could help others feel the same way now that I’m also somewhat of an upperclassman.

The fear of getting to know people has been a recurring theme in my life. But during my time at Morningside, I’ve realized that, while not easy, it’s better to keep yourself open to others. You can still be scared, but having the courage to move through that fear and allow yourself to be seen for who you are beyond the face that you bring to class is worth it.
