My name is Carter Gill. I’m a Marketing major with minors in Graphic Design and Electronic Media Production. My advisor suggested I take the graphic design minor, and I ended up loving it. My whole Morningside experience has been shaped by music, video, and getting involved. On campus, I sing tenor in the choir, and I work as a video editor in the Krone Center, which allows me to combine my love for tech and creativity.
Outside of school, I’m in a band called Exit 141 that my friends and I started in high school. This past summer, we got to play at Saturday in the Park, the largest music festival in Sioux City. Writing our own music has been very fulfilling. It’s taught me a lot about collaboration and doing what you love.
I chose Morningside mostly because of Dr. Person. He made an effort to know me and support my music journey, even though I wasn’t a music major. That welcoming atmosphere and the small class sizes were huge factors for me.
My drive really kicked in after some setbacks in high school that taught me to work hard and stay humble. Between Dr. P., and the choir, I’ve got a great team pushing me to keep going.
My biggest advice to freshmen is to find your crew. Building those friendships is key. Don’t be afraid to hang out with talented people who know more than you do—that’s how you learn. I always try to remind myself that there’s always room to grow and get better.
