My name is Andrew Tuohino. I am a triple major in Biology, Chemistry, and Public Health with dual minors in Math and Business Administration. I originally planned to go to medical school as a Biology and Chemistry major, then I added Public Health when it became available. The minors go hand in hand with my medical school requirements. Math and Business Administration will help me run a rural medicine clinic.

I’d like to be a physician in rural medicine, running a clinic in a small town where there’s a strong need for it. The summer before college, I went on a church mission trip that changed my perspective on healthcare needs. I met a rural physician who, after a car accident, could no longer practice. His story had a big impact on me.

I’m involved in band, wind ensemble, choir, and serve as Activities Coordinator of PPHC. I’m the co-president of the Sustainable Environment Association (SEA), treasurer of the Chemistry Club, and I’m a TA for Invertebrate Biology and Ecology.

Morningside stood out to me with its low student-to-staff ratio and smaller class sizes. It has allowed for stronger connections with my professors.

Between my sophomore and junior years, I struggled with depression. My professors noticed and reached out to support me; it made a big difference and helped me to get back on track.

I was so fortunate to get to know Pastor Andy and former University President. I met Pastor Andy at the first Wednesday worship night of my freshman year. Every time our university president would see me, he’d go out of his way to come say hi. It meant a lot that he knew and cared about who I was.

I also have a strong relationship with my advisor, Dr. Luger, who has been extremely encouraging and supportive as I navigate my busy class schedule.

My advice for freshmen is to get involved right away. Attending campus events helped me build a support system and make friends from the start. Having a social life is key to succeeding in college, so don’t be afraid to dive in, meet people, and be yourself.
