Designed for career changers, this program prepares new teachers. Morningside’s Teacher Intern Program is one of the only programs in the state that allows you to use your existing bachelor’s degree in an endorsable area (ie. Biology, English, Math, Business, Music, etc.) to become a teacher in an Iowa middle or high school in less than two years.

COURSES
Orientation to graduate education programs and readiness for online learning to be completed during the student’s first semester of enrollment. Expectations related to scholarly writing skills are introduced.
An overview of educational characteristics and their application in today’s classrooms, including sociological, historical, legal, and philosophical foundations of education, important theoretical developments related to teaching and learning, child and adolescent development, cognition, and educational research.
Survey of principles of inclusive environments, including application of strategies for effective instruction related to students from diverse ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds, students with disabilities, students who are gifted and talented, English language learners, and students at risk.
Prerequisite: Admission to the MAT: Secondary Education (Teacher Intern) Program
Develops pedagogical foundational skills for clinical practice such as instructional context, lesson planning, interactive instructional strategies, differentiation, assessment, integrating technology, and reflective practice. Students will also complete twenty hours of field experience.
Prerequisite: MAT: Secondary Education TNP (Teacher Intern) Program
A specialized course for teacher interns who are completing the accelerated Teach Now Pathway. Provides instruction for creating lesson plans, differentiation, technology integration, and classroom management for the novice teacher.
Instructional strategies for teaching students in grades 5-12, including literacy and technology.
Prerequisite: Admission to the MAT: Secondary Education (Teacher Intern) Program
Students will design and deliver at least two content area lessons to secondary students during their practicum experience. Fifteen hours of experience required in a secondary classroom.
Prerequisite: MAT: Secondary Education TNP (Teacher Intern) Program
A specialized course for teacher interns who are completing the Teacher Now Pathway where students will design and deliver at least two content area lessons to secondary students during their experience. Twenty-five hours of experience required in a secondary classroom.
Students engage in the scope and sequence of disciplines specific curriculum, design lessons and unit plans, deliver lessons for constructive feedback and reflection, and select appropriate strategies for the assessment of student learning.
Prerequisite: Admission to the MAT: Secondary Education (Teacher Intern) Program
Students engage with in-service teachers and interact with secondary students, plan and deliver at least two lessons, and assess student learning. Fifteen hours experience required in a secondary classroom.
Prerequisite: MAT: Secondary Education TNP (Teacher Intern) Program
A specialized course for teacher interns who are completing the Teach Now Pathway where students will interact with secondary students, lessons, and assess student learning. Twenty-five hours of experience required in a secondary classroom.
Teacher interns begin the transition of pedagogical knowledge to classroom implementation. Emphasis on professionally
preparing for the first days of school as a new teacher.
Teacher interns will be supported and mentored by a Morningside University Supervisor who will observe teacher interns regularly throughout the school year, collaborate with the district mentor and principal evaluator, and provide assistance and guidance to the teacher intern. Students will be enrolled in each semester the teacher intern is employed as the teacher of record.
Teacher Interns transition pedagogical knowledge to implementation and participate in a learning community to support teaching practice, share challenges and explore solutions. Teacher Interns collaborate to identify, evaluate, share, and provide feedback on lesson plans, management techniques, and assessments, engaging learners in critical thinking.
Teacher Interns continue to implement teaching practices, share challenges, and explore solutions within an established learning community. Advanced topics also included are examination of district and classroom differentiation, assessment practices, classroom behavior plans, and model code of ethics.
Focuses on Understanding evidence-based literacy instruction at the secondary education level. Students will engage with literacy theory and strategies to integrate literacy into content area instruction. Includes strategies for students with diverse learning needs, including but not limited to those identified with dyslexia.
Introduction to educational research and its value for classroom teachers as both users of traditional research and practitioners of action research.
Examination of the plan, teach, assess, reflect teaching cycle with a focus on the development, implementation, and analysis of classroom assessment practice, as it relates to action research.
Using foundational learning about the plan, teach, assess, reflect teaching cycle, students design, implement, and analyze an action research project in a K-12 setting.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education.

A minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale is required for admission. If an applicant does not have a 2.75 cumulative GPA, the last 60 hours of coursework completed will be considered under the same requirements.

MAT: Secondary Education and Elementary Education applicants should have at least 75% of the endorsement content completed for admission.

Successful applicants will also complete an interview with the faculty from the Sharon Walker School of Education.
FINANCIAL AID
There is a $150 non-refundable clinical course fee (required for some endorsement programs) and a $150 graduation fee (a one-time fee for degree programs) and a one-time Graduate Orientation Course fee of $230.
Teach Grants
Students seeking a master’s degree in education may be eligible for a federal TEACH grant.
