Although every year the Boston Marathon has been a significant event for runners throughout the country, in light of the pandemic the event was replanned and executed virtually in September 2020. Kaitlin Goforth, a 2013 graduate from Morningside, had the opportunity to participate in this event with the support of her family and community.

Obtaining her undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, Kaitlin then furthered her education by gaining a Master of Physician Assistant Studies in Lincoln, Nebraska. Additionally, being a part of Morningside’s Cross-Country team impacted Kaitlin’s experience at Morningside. She says, “the team created an environment that felt like family. Coach Nash was a big part of that, and he is an important asset to Morningside College.”

In May of 2019, Kaitlin qualified for the Boston Marathon by running a 3 hour and 25-minute marathon. Because the pandemic changed the Boston marathon to a virtual experience, the event was postponed to September 14th, 2020. Kaitlin chose to complete the marathon in her hometown of Worthington, Minnesota on Labor Day – September 7th, 2020. Although she hopes to run the Boston Marathon in person, Kaitlin ran her fastest time on the virtual marathon completing the 26.2 miles in 3:10:23!

Kaitlin advises Morningside students to “enjoy the little things, cherish the friendships you develop, and capitalize on every single opportunity you’re given in both the classroom and whichever sporting team you’re a part of.” Lastly, Kaitlin wants to thank her support system and encourages anyone who has the desire to accomplish a race of any distance to go for it!
