Mustangs win Cowtown Classic finale
Fifteenth-ranked Morningside defeated Bethel (Kan.) 8-3 in Saturday morning’s action in the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth before the rest of the softball tournament was cancelled due to cold temperatures.
The Mustangs, who were scheduled to face Bacone in the afternoon, ho finished the tourney with a 2-2 record.
Morningside jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Bethel when it plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abby Conner delivered the big blow with a two-run double before Mackenzie Lose and Rebecca Riley had RBI singles later in the inning.
Morningside made it 6-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Lose led off the inning with a home run before Abby Taylor doubled and came home on a RBI single by Tracey Edwards.
Edwards went four-for-four at the plate to pace an 11-hit Morningside offensive attack. Lose also had a multiple hit performance with a home run and single. Conner had a double, while Riley, Taylor, Ashton Whited and Lexie Stolen all had singles.
Hallie Misiaszek pitched a complete-game three-hitter for her first Morningside win. Misiaszek, a transfer addition from GPAC rival Dakota Wesleyan, walked three and struck out eight.
The Mustangs will compete in the Gulf Coast Invitational on March 2 and 3 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
