Alvarez Cancel goes for 14 kills against Briar Cliff
Third-ranked Briar Cliff defeated Morningside 25-15, 25-22, 25-17 in a men’s volleyball match between city rivals on Tuesday at Briar Cliff.
The Mustangs dropped their fourth straight match against a NAIA nationally ranked team to fall to 3-6 on the season.
Oscar Alvarez Cancel had a big night for the Mustangs with 14 kills and a .313 hitting percentage. Jacob Brand also had a productive match with nine kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Alvarez Cancel and Brand combined for 23 of the Mustangs’ 31 kills.
Aside from leading the Mustangs’ attack, Alvarez Cancel also led the team’s defensive effort with nine digs. Brett Kies had seven digs, while Jackson Presha and Jacob Loberg each had five.
Caden Toben dealt 29 assists and had the Mustangs’ lone ace serve of the contest.
Ryan Coyle led the Mustangs’ blocking effort with four block assists.
Morningside will compete in the Park University Pirate Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Parkville, Mo.
