High school choirs from Sibley-Ocheyedan, Denison and Heelan high schools will perform three new, original compositions during a Morningside College concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the Sioux City East High School Auditorium, 5011 Mayhew Ave.
The concert will take place at East High School because Morningside College begins renovating Eppley Auditorium on April 1.
The new compositions are the winning entries from Morningside’s third annual choral composition contest held earlier this spring. Each of the winning composers –Jon Strommen Campbell with "They that Go Down to the Sea in Ships,” Deanna Wehrspann with "It Was Always You," and Philip P. Pfaltzgraff with “I'm Going Home" – will conduct a clinic for the participating high school choirs in the afternoon prior to the concert.
The Morningside College Choir, Bel Canto Women’s Chorus, Singing Men of Morningside and Eclectix Jazz Choir also will perform during the concert.
“This event provides a unique opportunity to support and promote the creation of new choral music and for young musicians to interact with the composers who created the music they will be singing,” said Tim Watson, director of choral activities at Morningside.
The event has a $5 per person admission charge. Tickets will be available at the door. Proceeds will go to the continuation of this event.
