Sixteen high school teams won their way to televised Quiz Bowl competition after participating in a preliminary tournament held Saturday, Jan. 11, on the Morningside College campus. A total of 32 teams from high schools in Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska participated in the preliminary tournament.
The top 16 teams from Saturday’s preliminary tournament will compete for championship honors in the Quiz Bowl Tournament that will be broadcast Sundays on KCAU-TV in Sioux City beginning Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.
The broadcast contests will culminate with a championship game scheduled to air at 11 a.m. on May 11.
The first weekly broadcast on Feb. 2 is scheduled to feature Quiz Bowl teams from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School and Sioux City East.
Other Quiz Bowl teams that have qualified for the broadcast competitions are Dakota Valley, Bishop Heelan, Le Mars Community, Alta-Aurelia, West Monona, MOC-Floyd Valley, Le Mars Gehlen, Boyer Valley, Unity Christian, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, Wisner-Pilger, Westwood, West Bend Mallard and Sioux City North.
Each 30-minute Quiz Bowl broadcast on KCAU-TV will feature two teams vying for points by correctly answering questions that range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and current events. Julie Eickhoff of McCook Lake, S.D., is serving as the on-air host and moderator for the broadcast competitions.
Winning teams from the eight weeks of first-round competitions will move on to play in four weeks of quarter-final contests. Two weeks of semi-final competition lead to the May 11 championship game broadcast.
All of the Quiz Bowl contests are taped in television studios on the Morningside College campus for later broadcast on KCAU-TV.
