The dedication of the Mason Family Tennis Complex was held during Homecoming 2016 weekend following the renovation of the tennis courts earlier that summer.
The six-court Mason Family Tennis Complex is located in Lewis Park at the intersection of South Paxton Street and Peters Avenue next to the Morningside campus.
The City of Sioux City transferred ownership of the Lewis Park tennis courts to Morningside in the fall of 2014. In exchange, Morningside agreed to upgrade the facility including the resurfacing of the courts, replace fencing, painting and other improvements, including windscreens along the fences and bleachers for spectators.
The renovation was completed thanks to several generous gifts from Morningside alumni and friends, including Larry Mason, Dr. Charles and Patricia Mason, Tom Rosen, Richard and Frances Keith, Capt. Russell C. McComsey and alumni brothers of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
The $200,000 renovation project began May 15, 2015 and finished later that summer.
Danny Graves and Natasha Hongsermeier, members of the Mustangs’ men’s and women’s tennis teams, were the first players to use the new courts just minutes after the renovations were completed on Aug. 7, 2015.
