Morningside College offers a minor, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. We also offer a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics teaching. The degree is only part of the experience at Morningside. Math students enjoy structured opportunities to engage in research, social and academic clubs with other math majors.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
SURP is a funded scholar’s program that compensates students and faculty for participating in meaningful undergraduate research over the summer. In 2016, Professor Tessa Weinstein and math major Travis Metzger were awarded a SURP grant to develop a mathematical model of the Zika virus.
The Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Contests in Modeling (MCM/ICM)
Each year, the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications sponsors the Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Contests in Modeling. Participating in this valuable resume-building experience for the first time in 2016, Morningside College entered five teams, two of which received an Honorable Mention.
This organization meets regularly and encourages students to learn about fun and interesting aspects of mathematics. Meetings vary widely: from mathematically themed movie nights, to guest lectures, to mathematical pumpkin carvings, to mathematical game/casino nights. One thing is for sure: every meeting is an experience.
Kappa Mu Epsilon
Qualifying students can also join Kappa Mu Epsilon, the Mathematics honors society.
