John Kolbo

Teaches graphic design. He owns a graphics studio and has worked as a designer and an art director for the past 30 years. Education: B.A., Morningside College


Adjunct Faculty

Paul Adamson

Paul Adamson has been an art educator in northwest Iowa for over 40 years and a practicing artist concentrating in ceramic art. Most of his artwork is functional stoneware, Raku and porcelain, emphasizing texture and hand building.  

His work has been displayed at Iowa State University, Coe College, Northwest Missouri State University and the Sioux Art Center. He received his B.S. Degree from South Dakota State University, with Graduate work at Iowa State University, Northwest Missouri State University and Colorado State University.

Adamson teaches Methods of Teaching Secondary Art.  His most enjoyable hobby is officiating high school volleyball in Iowa and Nebraska.

Charles Bass

Charles Bass earned his BA in Studio Art, Philosophy, and Religious Studies from Morningside College in 2014. In 2017 he earned MFA in Studio Art from Mills College in Oakland, California. He now teaches Design.

He exhibits his participatory and conceptual artworks in both California and Iowa.




Emeritus John Bowitz

John Bowitz received the Honorary Doctorate this year.

He has been with Morningside College since 1977, serving the students and faculty as Chair of the Art Department for 17 years, and with great wisdom and creativity. Prior to this, he was at Ottumwa Heights College as Chair of the Division of Fine Arts.  

Bowitz received his MFA and MS from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1971 and 1970. He received his BS from the Univ. of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1969.  He teaches courses in Ceramics.

Edward Van Etten

Edward Van Etten teaches Introduction to Photography.

He teaches at Walthill Public School, where he has been for the last fourteen years. Over the course of his career he has taught a variety of subjects at the secondary level. He currently teaches American History, World History, Government, and Photography.

Edward received his BA and MAT from Morningside College, and a MA in Native American History from Nebraska Wesleyan. Throughout his degrees he took many art classes, focusing primarily on photography.

Besides teaching, he runs his own photography business, which focuses on (no pun intended) a variety of portraiture work. His work has also appeared in modeling and skateboarding magazines.

Holly McManigal

Holly McManigal is an adjunct instructor for Elementary Art Methods. She received her art teaching certificate from Morningside College and her Master of Science from Southwest Minnesota State University.   Holly has been teaching art with the Sioux City Community School District at North Middle since 2011.  Before teaching she was a graphic artist for fifteen years. 



Shannon Sargent

After serving six years in the United States Marine Corps as a Mountaineering Instructor, Sargent attended Morningside College and received his B.S. in art (2000).  He then attended the University of South Dakota and received his M.F.A. in painting (2002).

He is the Exhibitions/Collections Coordinator at the Sioux City Art Center where he maintains the permanent collection and installs the exhibitions.  

Sargent teaches sculpture classes and serves as Gallery Coordinator.  He produces and shows his work in the region and lives in Sioux City with his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Shay.  

Christopher Thomas

Christopher Thomas teaches Elementary Art Methods.

He has taught art at eight elementary schools in the Sioux City Community School District. He also has taught art classes for students in the talented and gifted or special education programs.

He currently teaches art at East Middle School in Sioux City, where he is a member of the Building Leadership Team and a trained mentor for first-year teachers. He earned his BA from Briar Cliff University and MAT from Morningside College.


Stephanie VonderAhe

Stephanie VonderAhe teaches Printmaking in various processes as well as a Data Visualization course.  

She earned her BA from Humboldt State University in 2013 and her MFA from the University of South Dakota in 2016. She has also taught courses for a number of years at Western Iowa Technology Community College and the University of South Dakota including courses as Drawing, Art Appreciation, and Printmaking.

She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Some exhibits include Boundless: New Works in Contemporary Printmaking and the 15th Lessedra World Art Print Annual - Mini Print. She has participated in workshops such as Frogman Print Workshop, Monoprint Workshop, the Italian Street Art Festival for Youth in Arts, and Siouxlands Chalk the Block. She has also travelled to New York, meeting with other established Professional Artists.

Jodi Whitlock

Jodi Whitlock graduated from Briar Cliff University in 2007 with a BA in painting and a minor in psychology. She received her MFA in painting at The University of South Dakota in 2012. Since 2007, she has been teaching various classes at WITCC and the Sioux City Art Center as well as art camps and other art centered activities around Sioux City.

Recent shows include University Invitational at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Portrait Painting at the Sioux City Art Center, Artists choose Artists at the Sioux City Art Center, MFA show at the University of South Dakota, and The Briar Cliff Review at the Sioux City Art Center.
