Area Coordinator / Resident Education Coordinator

Morningside University is now accepting applications for the position of Area Coordinator/Resident Education Coordinator. This is a full-time, live-in professional staff position within Residence Life. This position is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and educational residential environment for approximately 200+ residential students. The coordinator supervises student staff, manages daily residential operations, responds to student concerns and emergencies, and supports departmental initiatives related to housing, student engagement, and retention.

This position requires evening and weekend availability, participation in an on-call rotation, and collaboration with campus partners across Student Life and campus operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Area Coordinator

  • Coordinate the daily operations of assigned residence halls, apartments, or campus houses.
  • Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate Resident Assistants (RAs), Head Residents (HRs), and other student employees.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and provide ongoing staff development and support.
  • Address student concerns, behavioral issues, and policy violations in a timely and professional manner.
  • Participate in the residence life on-call rotation and provide crisis response and emergency management support as needed.
  • Assist with housing assignments, occupancy management, room changes, check-in/check-out processes, and student transitions.
  • Support the opening, closing, and summer operations of campus residential facilities.
  • Collaborate with custodial, maintenance, safety, and campus partners to ensure safe and effective facility operations.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting, planning, assessment, and retention initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, institutional committees, training programs, and other Student Life initiatives.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training

  • Coordinate and promote the annual recruitment, selection, and hiring process for Residence Life student staff.
  • Assist with ongoing recruitment and hiring needs outside of the annual selection cycle.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive fall and mid-year training programs for Residence Life staff.
  • Coordinate staff development initiatives, including training schedules, guest speakers, materials, and facility reservations.
  • Facilitate ongoing in-service training and professional development opportunities throughout the academic year.
  • Assess and evaluate training effectiveness and staff development outcomes each semester.

Educational Development and Wellness Programming

  • Support the development and implementation of educational programming initiatives led by Head Residents (HRs) and Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Develop and facilitate campus-wide educational programs focused on topics such as relationships, alcohol awareness, personal wellness, and student success.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and community partners to support a comprehensive wellness programming calendar aligned with the Morningside University Wellness Model.
  • Coordinate wellness-focused events and outreach initiatives in partnership with Student Health Services, Counseling Services, campus departments, and community organizations.

 Student Support and Advising

  • Serve as a resource and support person for residential students.
  • Provide referrals to campus resources and student support services as appropriate.
  • Promote student success, engagement, and personal development through proactive student interactions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners.Experience in Residence Life, Student Services, Student Activities, or related areas within higher education preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, databases, and standard office software applications.
  • Effective communication, organization, and human relations skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Must be able to reside in on-campus housing provided by the institution.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
