Residence Advisor Summer Program

General Requirements:

All applicants should clearly demonstrate experience with and commitment to, underrepresented, ethnically diverse, and disadvantaged youth. Applicants must be able to work closely with the entire staff and be available for all program events, including staff training, planning, and other types of meetings and/or sessions. All personnel, 21 years of age and older, will share responsibilities from time to time for transporting students to/from students’ home communities in UNL or other rental vehicles. A background check and successful completion of a van-driving test is required.

Specific Requirements:

Applicants must be mature college undergraduates or graduates by June 1 of the application year and possess a good academic record. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Must be willing to travel and live among the NEUB participants while residing in the residence hall and while traveling. Experience supervising youth is preferred; experience leading small groups and tutoring is desirable. Must be a good role model for the students displaying professional behavior and by adhering to NEUB code of conduct guidelines and dress code.

Time Commitment:

2 months, 1.0 FTE: 40 hours per week is paid

Compensation:

Salary: $7.00 per hour for the summer program and, if applicable, the summer trip (up to 40 hours per week unless on an internship program,) pay includes advance training, planning time, free room and board during the six-week session and also the summer trip, if it occurs.

General Description of Responsibilities:

General description of responsibilities includes but is not limited to:

1. Provides daily supervision for NEUB participating students
2. Provides personal guidance for students
3. Serves as a classroom assistant
4. Submits written reports on students’ progress
5. Monitors USDA nutritional requirements
6. Plans and conducts special events in residence halls
7. Supervises students during evening activities and athletic programs
8. Maintains order among students in vehicles and in public during field trips
9. Performs other tasks as assigned

Specific functions included but are not limited to:
? Walking participants to class for the first two weeks
? Being on call 24-hours a day for the duration of the summer program and trip
? Ensuring hall security to maintain the health and safety of participants
? Maintain sufficient communication with program staff and participants
to ensure efficient program operation
? Monitoring participants for the duration of the summer program and trip
? Ensuring that all participants are in their rooms and remain there after lights are out
? Attending all program functions with participants
? Attending weekly staff meetings
? Maintaining necessary discipline and harmonious relationships with participants and staff
? Assisting others with programming to ensure that all classes, activities, and events are organized
? Tutoring participants during study times on designated floors
? Creating an atmosphere on the floors that is conducive to learning
? Assessing participants academic, emotional and social needs
? Submitting participant evaluation for each assigned participant
? Report to respective staff with regards to any problems and/or disciplinary measures during program activities and field trips
? Reporting immediately to appropriate staff any serious misbehavior from a participant, his/her guest or any extreme situation
? Refraining from hosting any visitors or personal telephone calls during working hours
? Observing all residence hall policies and procedures including curfews even when not on duty
